SA pays tribute to Amina Cachalia

first_img1 February 2013 South Africans from across the political spectrum have paid tribute to Amina Cachalia, a staunch anti-apartheid activist and long-time friend of former president Nelson Mandela, who passed away on Thursday, aged 82. “A seasoned campaigner for women’s rights and one of the liberation movement’s foremost stalwarts, Amina came from a fiercely political family and dedicated her life full-on to the emancipation of all oppressed people in South Africa,” the Presidency said in a statement on Friday. Her political activism saw her play leading roles as a member of the Transvaal Indian Youth Congress and Transvaal Indian Congress, as treasurer of the Federation of South African Women (Fedsaw) and as patron of the Federation of Transvaal Women, among others.‘Tireless fighter for liberation’ “Our country has lost one of the most tireless and consummate fighters for liberation that we have known,” President Jacob Zuma said, “and we would like to express our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, comrades and all who had the privilege of knowing her.” Cachalia had several stints in prison, including when she was arrested during the 1952 Defiance Campaign and also participated in the 1956 Women’s March against apartheid pass laws, and became a banned person at various stages. African National Congress (ANC) spokesman Jackson Mthembu said “Comrade Amina” was “among the women who are credited for having placed gender equity firmly as a site of struggle and aligned it to broader struggles led by the ANC. As an individual she lived through the pain of police harassment, imprisonment, house arrests, banning and humiliation.” Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille said, that, as a member of the Indian Youth Congress and founder of the Women’s Progressive Union, Cachalia “fought fiercely to overcome injustice and racial discrimination”. Zille said that Cachalia, together with Helen Joseph, Lillian Ngoyi and Ida Mtwana, had founded Fedsaw, which led 20 000 women on the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. A Member of Parliament after South Africa’s first democratic elections of 1994, Cachalia received the Order of Luthuli in recognition of a life spent fighting for freedom and democracy.‘Travelled a long road with Mr Mandela’ The Nelson Mandela Foundation said on Friday that it had learned with great sadness of Cachalia’s passing. “Amina Cachalia travelled a long road with Mr Mandela and his family. She and her husband Yusuf were friends with Mr Mandela in the years before he went to prison,” the foundation said in a statement. “After he was imprisoned in 1962, they kept in touch through letters. Only after he was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison was he finally allowed to be visited by Mrs Cachalia and her husband. “They resumed their friendship after his release in 1990. In 1995 Mrs Cachalia assisted him at a luncheon he arranged for the widows of leaders from across the political spectrum. As the widow of apartheid prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd could not attend, Mr Mandela travelled to the white enclave of Orania to visit her. Mrs Cachalia accompanied him. “On 1 June 1986, when he was in Pollsmoor Prison, he wrote her a letter saying: ‘I love you and Yusuf very much and you are always in my thoughts … There is, therefore, no danger whatsoever of me forgetting you.’” SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

5 Things Dropbox Competitors Need

first_imgI got all excited this morning when I saw a link on Hacker News to BitPocket, one of the latest so-called “DIY Dropbox” offerings that’s open source. The excitement faded pretty quickly when I hit the GitHub repo and found that it’s just a “small but smart script that does 2-way directory synchronization” without most of the Dropbox features. Dropbox didn’t get where it is today by being a wrapper for rsync, Git, Unison or any of the other open source tools for file synchronization. If you want to replicate Dropbox’s suceess, there’s a few features that are mandatory.Top-Notch SynchronizationThe biggest failing that Bitpocket has is the lack of automatic sync. As I’m writing this post (in Vim, using Markdown on my MacBook Pro), Dropbox is syncing it with my iMac and my Linux Mint computer as well as with the Dropbox service. It’s doing it silently, without any intervention or extra setup on my part. Before Dropbox, I used rsync over SSH to sync my files to rsync.net and my other computers. It was workable, but not particularly convenient. It took about ten minutes for me to decide to plunk down the monthly fee for Dropbox after discovering the LAN sync feature in Dropbox. Platform UbiquityAnother feature that any Dropbox challenger needs? Platform ubiquity. If it doesn’t run on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS and Android, I’m not interested. Technically, I’m actually OK with a service that doesn’t run on Windows, but the sheer number of folks who use Windows means that any Dropbox alternative is pretty much DOA without a Windows client. And there’s very little attraction to any tool that doesn’t sync with my mobile device.Web AccessIf I’m not on a computer I control, I still want to be able to get to a file in a pinch. Dropbox’s Web interface is perfect for the few times I don’t have my own computer handy, or haven’t gotten around to installing Dropbox yet. Since I tend to do a lot of testing, it’s not uncommon for me to set up a new box without wanting to hassle with installing Dropbox when I’m going to be wiping a system in a few days. (Not that Dropbox is all that hard to install.)Revision Control and File RestoreRevision control and file restore are features I don’t use often, but are worth the price of Dropbox even if I use them just twice a year. I admit it, I’ve fat-fingered rm once or twice in 2011, and saved over a file in LibreOffice that I didn’t mean to. Revision control and file restore mean that I’ve been able to recover gracefully with zero loss of data. Unless an alternative can give me that, I’m not switching.SharingFinally, I need to be able to share files with co-workers and friends. Dropbox makes this dirt simple, even for other folks that don’t use Dropbox. Falling ShortBitpocket and other sync scripts and tools may be acceptable for some use cases, but they don’t rise to the “Dropbox” label. Up-and-coming projects like SparkleShare may be nifty collaboration tools, but they’re not a Dropbox replacement.I’d love to see an open source, DIY alternative to Dropbox, but so far none have come close. Why Apple, Google, And Samsung Want To Lock You In With Wearables

first_imgTags:#Android#Android Wear#Apple#Apple Watch#Arm Race#Google#Guest Posts#iOS#lock-in#platforms#Samsung#Samsung Gear#smartwatch How to Avoid Being Part of 90% of Failed Companies christian cantrell Why Your eCommerce Business Should Have a Pop-U… Why Your Company’s Tech Transformation Starts W…center_img Guest author Christian Cantrell is a developer, blogger and science fiction author.Chances are you’re either an iOS person or an Android person. Chances are also pretty good that whichever platform you’re currently using, you will remain faithful come upgrade time. Mobile devices, it turns out, are a little like political affiliation, ice cream preference, and James Bond fandom: Most of us find something we like, weave it into our identities, then vehemently defend it.But every once in a while, much like our favorite Game of Thrones characters, someone unexpectedly changes sides. Maybe it’s screen size that tips the balance, or platform pressure from a group of new peers, or a particularly crafty salesperson with incentives to clear out aging inventory. Whatever the impetus, if you pay careful attention to smartphone metrics, although the majority of consumers remain devoted to their chosen clans, the tides do shift. There are typically three parts to platform migration: getting accustomed to a new physical form factor, acclimating to a different user experience, and either navigating the perils of data migration yourself, or entrusting your entire digital life to someone else (usually either a smarmy sales rep, or a tech-savvy relative who can’t say no). Defecting from one mobile faction to another may be inconvenient, but it’s not yet impossible, which is why major platform players are inclined to steer their devices and services in a direction that increases not only their allure, but also the cost of abandonment. And an important new weapon of mass disincentive is wearables. How Wearables Lock You InGenerally speaking, you have two types of wearables: platform-agnostic, and platform-dependent. Platform-agnostic wearables are devices that work with either iOS or Android (and in some cases, even Windows Phone). These include most fitness trackers like the Fitbit, and some smartwatches like the Pebble Time and Garmin Fenix 3. Their main advantage is that you can pair them with whatever device you happen to have, and they usually function pretty consistently—or, at least, to within a tolerable variance. Platform-dependent wearables, on the other hand, are those that will only work with one brand of device, and in fact, are better conceptualized as extensions of those devices rather than standalone gadgets. Canonical examples include Apple Watch, Android Wear devices and most of the myriad of wrist-top concoctions hatched by Samsung. The advantage of platform-dependent wearables is that they integrate with your phone’s OS more tightly, leveraging APIs and services that third-party devices might not have access to, and generally delivering a more seamless and better unified user experience. But the disadvantage of such a tight coupling is that you are more heavily invested in that one specific platform, limiting your options the next time you find yourself upgrade-eligible.If the rumors about Google working on iOS support for Android Wear are true, it’s possible that a third category of wearables is about to emerge: platform-preferred. A platform-preferred device is one that can be considered “native” to one platform, but can function at some level when paired with the competition. The problem with the prospect of pairing an Android Wear smartwatch with an iPhone is that—due to constraints that limit deep third-party OS integration, or simply fundamental discrepancies in platform features—you are likely to find yourself in a kind of purgatory where your experience is worse than if you were using an Android phone, and also not as good as if you were wearing an Apple Watch. Many iPhone users who try to use Google services exclusively are already familiar with this unfortunate dynamic. For example, you won’t be able to access Apple Pay from a Moto 360 (or probably any other Android Wear device, current or future), nor will you be able to smart unlock your iPhone with your watch. As a result, the more invested you become in wearables, the more you are probably going to be tempted to bring your devices into more harmonious alignment. For the truly platform devout, party-line conformity isn’t a problem. In fact, it’s practically a feature since it dramatically simplifies things like compatibility, upgrade decisions, and support. But for those of us who like to keep our options open—who want to ensure that some of the most powerful entities on the face of the planet continue to be motivated to compete for our fealty—the rise of wearables presents a pretty serious compatibility conundrum.Google primarily makes money from services, so it makes sense to try to establish as much of a presence as possible across multiple platforms and devices. But for a company like Apple—one of the few companies left that still enjoys huge profit margins on hardware—deep device and platform integration isn’t just a convenience for customers. It’s a business imperative. Why The Apple Watch Isn’t Gunning For Market ShareOn its face, it might seem like a mistake for Apple to inextricably link the Apple Watch to the iPhone. Why invest so heavily in an entirely new product category like smartwatches, but intentionally engineer them so that they will only appeal to a relatively small fraction of the total addressable market? Actually, to be more specific, only a fraction of a fraction since iPhones only make up roughly 18% of worldwide smartphone market share, and it appears only a subset of iPhone owners want an Apple Watch. On the other hand, if the Apple Watch were compatible with any modern smartphone, while still offering additional features and functionality when paired with phones of their own noble lineage, the total addressable market would instantly skyrocket. The only reasonable conclusion is that there is much more to be gained in platform acquisition and retention than there is in simply shipping and selling a few million more devices per quarter. Public companies need their revenue to be as predictable, consistent, and as steady as possible which means they require their customers to be as loyal (or locked-in—either way works) as possible. They need such business and marketing constructs as customer and product pipelines; they need subscribers to services as opposed to isolated impulse buys; and they need the walls of their ever-expanding gardens to grow increasingly unassailable. Of course, to not do everything possible (or at least legal) to retain customers would ultimately be irresponsible. Most of these companies would find themselves playing by different rules than their competition, putting them at a distinct disadvantage. It’s Going To Be A Bumpy Ride As wearables become increasingly available, capable, and prevalent, I think it’s worth acknowledging the paradox many of them embody. In one sense, they are about freeing us from phones, PCs, and other less convenient technologies by making information and human connection much more readily accessible. In exchange for freeing ourselves from one burden, we are agreeing to take on another. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t buy devices like smartwatches; it just means we should be fully aware of the fact that, as much as we’re strapping devices to ourselves, we are also strapping ourselves to our devices. Modelling world is not always glamorous, says Lisa Haydon at India Today Conclave

first_imgModelling may come across as a very glamorous job as everything looks perfect in a picture. But for that one perfect shot one has to take 100 imperfect ones where you pretty much keep repeating your postures until you get it right.First ad campaign was for a stretch mark cream. The essential difference between acting and modelling is that you get judged a lot more when you’re onscreen. As an actor, you have to put in a lot more emotionally. But funny thing is your attributes as a model-being too thin and tall-becomes a hindrance for an actor. It’s normal to feel inadequate. Don’t try to get rid of that feeling, as it’s human. Just accept it.It’s inappropriate to say women should stay at home. A woman should be allowed to do whatever she wants-be it be a mother, cook a great meal or have a fantastic job.Teach your children to value their own selves. Be original. That’s what beauty is all about. It’s about charisma, and not about what you wear or how you appear. It’s about reinventing ourselves and continuing to evolve.A lot about beauty is how comfortable or how confident you are with your body. And I gained that by doing a lot of sports, swimming etc that allows you to do what you want to do. I look at my body as a tool with which one lives life. It’s not something to be stared at or judged. It’s to be uninhibited. The perception of beauty changes from country to country, culture to culture. We are more than what we wear; what’s more important is what lies beneath. If I was fat, I may not have worn the clothes that I’m wearing now but I would have felt no inhibition to wear whatever I am confident about. My role in Queen was of a woman who was what she was, never apologising for the way she thought or lived her life.I’m wearing a tuxedo because it makes me feel powerful and intelligent. Our outfits are indicators of who we are not just to others but to ourselves.I went for my first audition when I was 18, wearing a top and a pair of jeans. When the agency people met me they wanted me to lose 5 kilos. Now here I was thinking that I was skinny and trying all through my school years to gain weight and now I had to lose it all. But then when I moved to India my first assignment was with designer Tarun Tahiliani who said I was too skinny and needed to put on weight. So what I came to understand is that there’s no fixed perception of beauty. first_imgLeicester boss Rodgers hits back at Maddison critics: Pure lies!by Freddie Taylor8 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveLeicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has defended James Maddison for playing poker after leaving the England camp with illness.Maddison was spotted on Friday evening in a casino during England’s Euro 2020 qualifier in the Czech Republic on Friday after illness ruled him out of the match. But Rodgers says Maddison has been portrayed in an unfair and false light by the press.”It was a difficult period for him, there is no doubt, because obviously what was portrayed in an article in the press was wasn’t quite how it was, which is not a big surprise,” Rodgers told a news conference.”The kid went away with the international team, he took ill whilst he was away. He wanted to stay, and hopefully be ready for the second game, but the England medical staff – and you can understand it, he’s got flu – they don’t want it to spread his team-mates. They decide that it’s best for him to to to leave the camp.”So he leaves. He gets some tablets with our guys here at the club. He feels better. He watches the game at home on his own on the Friday.”And he then goes out at half-time. Probably he’ll make better decisions in his life, but he went to a casino on his own, to sit and watch the second half by a poker table.”Now the suggestions are he left England purposely and then goes to casino – it’s totally not the case at all”But his eyes have been opened to the wider world now in terms of what he did. He knows in hindsight that he’s made a mistake.”But I want to reiterate, because this is a player I have seen (of) in the last few months various stories around his arrogance, around his mentality. They’re totally false.”I’m not sure where the stories are coming from, but it’s not what this boy’s about. He’s a very talented player, he has a belief in his ability. He is a wonderful personality on the field and he’s actually a really, really good boy off it.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Wisconsin Takes Down The Champs

But this wasn’t just a case of Villanova playing poorly. Wisconsin also played a great game. The Badgers had one of their best 2-point shooting performances of the season (65 percent from inside the arc), and they outworked ‘Nova on the glass as well. Just as importantly, Wisconsin held the nation’s fourth-best offense to one of its weakest games of the year, in part by taking the air out of the ball and denying opportunities to one of the nation’s top fast-break offenses.1Wisconsin wasn’t perfect — the Badgers made the upset more difficult than it had to be with 14 turnovers and some truly abysmal foul shooting. So Wisconsin was good, and Villanova bad. There was a third character in the making of this upset, however: the NCAA selection committee, which did Villanova no favors as the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed. As part of the most difficult region in the bracket, Wisconsin was an 8 seed with a KenPom.com rating similar to others seeded as high as fourth (Butler), third (Florida State) and even second (Arizona) in other regions. From the Round of 32 on, Villanova was staring down a tough slate of opponents, and that would have been true whether they held on against Wisconsin or not. Now, our model has a new favorite in the East, with a 37 percent chance of making the Final Four: Yep, it’s the No. 2-seeded Duke Blue Devils. But this might not be the last we see of the Badgers either — the model gives them the second-best odds of winning the region (in part because they’re already in the Sweet 16), with a 21 percent probability of earning the school’s third Final Four berth in four seasons.Check out our March Madness predictions. So much for one of the most uneventful NCAA tournaments ever. After a quiet first round that saw the better seed win 26 of 32 games, Villanova — the defending tourney champion — became the first No. 1 seed to fall with a 65-62 loss to Wisconsin on Saturday. The Wildcats didn’t play their best game. They shot just 41 percent from the floor with an offensive efficiency of 107 points per 100 possessions, both well below their season averages, and they allowed an extremely uncharacteristic 111 points per 100 possessions at the other end of the floor. For a team that consistently played above its averages during its championship run last season (particularly on offense), this was a callback to previous tournament disappointments by Jay Wright-led Villanova teams.VIDEO: How the Villanova and Duke losses shook the bracket read more

Borussia Dortmund brace up for Pulisic bid

first_imgFormer Bundesliga Champions Borussia Dortmund are bracing up for bids from top European clubs for Christian Pulisic as he continues to show class. The USA international, who has been closely followed by Liverpool and Chelsea, was the man of the match as Dortmund beat Guardiola’s men 1-0 in the International Champions Cup on Friday. The 19-year-old winger was brought down by Oleksandr Zinchenko to win the deciding penalty which Mario Gotze expertly converted. He was taken off later on in preparation for Dortmund’s next match against Liverpool, who made an effort to sign him a few seasons ago and are still keeping close tabs on him.Apart from the Premier League clubs Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona have all indicated an interest to sign him.Jadon SanchoMerson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho might be the perfect player to play for the Gunners, according to former England international Paul Merson.“[Christian Pulisic] played extremely well today,” said Dortmund coach Lucien Favre in his postmatch conference.“He knows exactly when he has to accelerate, which he showed three or four times today. His dribbling on the right wing was superb. He has a lot of ambition and is still very young – he’s a very good player.”Bayern are considered favourites to land the American as they prepare for life after Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery. They have already made overtures to sign him for this windowEuropean Champions Madrid like the idea that Pulisic can play wide or as a playmaker and his nationality opens up greater commercial revenue opportunities in the States.Dortmund would want more than £50million for their star player who has readily admitted his love for the English game and maybe even willing to sacrifice Champions League football to consider England’s top flight.last_img read more

DOnofrio The era of violence is coming to an end

first_imgRiver Plate President Rodolfo D’Onofrio hopes that the coming days will mark the end of violence in Argentine football and its society.Rodolfo spoke to Marca in the hours leading up to the grand final between Boca Juniors and River Plate and he is confident that there will be no violence even after receiving threats to his life and family.“This Thursday in the Congress, a law was projected against that and the House is approving very strong sanctions for those who commit those acts.”“I want this to be an example for Argentine football so that there is a before and after. As England did with the hooligans, in Spain with the ultras… the hardest law must be applied. I hope to see improvement on this.”“It’s a great shame that the most important match in Argentina has to be played in another country. I also hold the AFA responsible because those who manage it would have had to talk with the institutions.”River Plate v Boca Juniors - Copa CONMEBOL Libertadores 2018Match Preview: River Plate vs Boca Juniors Boro Tanchev – September 1, 2019 It is time for one of the most intense derby games in the world, as River Plate and Boca Juniors go head-to-head tonight at 22:00 (CET).“You don’t have to gather an army to be able to play football, but intelligence.”“You have to turn the page after everything that has happened. We are already in Madrid and we are trying to concentrate on the match. We want it to be a party atmosphere and understand that it is a game, it’s not about the death of anyone.“Both teams are representations of what is the Argentine’s passion for football.
