Campbell and Co stun disappointing Uruguay

first_img To make things worse for Uruguay, Maxi Pereira was sent off for an idiotic and violent hack on Campbell. 14/06/2014 And with Uruguay pressing for an equaliser, Costa Rica stung them again, with Campbell turning provider. He slid a brilliant through-ball in for Marco Urena, who rolled it past the miserable Muslera to seal the game. Most had expected them to come bottom of the “Group of Death”, also featuring England and Italy, but this was an inspired comeback.  And then Costa Rica turned the game on its head in the second period. Referee: Felix Brych (Germany). Goal: Campbell 53′; Duarte 57′; Urena 84′. A free kick on the right was whipped in superbly to the back post and Oscar Duarte dived in to head the ball back across Fernando Muslera’s goal and into the far corner.  Costa Rica: Navas, Gamboa, Umana, Gonzalez, Duarte, Diaz, Bolanos, Borges, Tejeda (Cubero 74), Ruiz (Urena 83), Campbell. The rest of the first half was an attritional affair, with neither side making any great threat. Costa Rica stunned Uruguay in Fortaleza despite falling behind to the fancied South American side. Sent off: Campbell. Uruguay threw on Gonzalez and Lodeiro immediately, while Abel Hernandez replacing Cristian Rodriguez was their third substitution later on. Uruguay: Muslera, Caceres, Lugano, Godin, Pereira, Gargano (Gonzalez 59), Arevalo, Rodriguez (Hernandez 76), Stuani, Forlan (Lodeiro 59), Cavani. Arsenal striker Joel Campbell took down a cross well and rifled home to equalise for Costa Rica. It was a brilliant goal, superbly taken by the young forward, who spent the last season on loan at Olympiacos.center_img England and Italy beware, Costa Rica are not here to make up the numbers.  The Liverpool forward is arguably the most in-form plater in the world but injury hampered his preparations for the World Cup and he may return against England next week.  And in the 57th minute, they scored again. Levante goalkeeper Navas, so impressive this season, made a fine stop from a Cavani header as Uruguay searched for an equaliser.  Upd. on 15/06/2014 at 05:03 CEST It looked soft at first but upon repeat viewings it was clear the referee had made the right call. But they only had to wait a few moments more for the goal they craved.  Uruguay thought they had taken the lead when Diego Godin prodded home from close range, but he was correctly adjudged to be offside.  Match facts Rik Sharma It meant star striker Luis Suarez was left on the sidelines.  Goal: Cavani 23 (pen). Booked: Caceres, Lugano, Gargano. Felix Brych pointed to the spot after 22 minutes, when Junior Diaz dragged down defender Diego Lugano in the box. Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani stepped up to the mark and drilled the penalty coolly past Keylor Navas, into the bottom-right corner.last_img read more
